Caucus 2010

Last night our little family ventured out to the Republican Caucus. As we were nearing closer to Centerville Junior High we noticed there were a TON of cars, which equals NO parking. We found a nice street to park on and then walked up to the school. This was the first sign that this Caucus was going to be very different than the last Caucus we attended.

Pause...The last Caucus we went to was for Fruit Heights/Kaysville. There were 10 people from our precinct and it was really quick. We elected our leaders and were on our way.

Now back to this year. We get into the Junior High, meet together in the Gym to hear the platform, and then headed to our individual precincts. In our precinct alone there were about 75 people. I've always thought it would be fun to be a State Delegate one of these years, but definitely not this year. Not with this crowd. We had the co-founder of Franklin Covey, attorneys, Deputy director for Bob Bennett, a woman who had PRINTED out her speech to become a delegate, and many others who were very very knowledgeable about what was going on in our government. I was very impressed. We had each nominee make a speech and answer questions that we had. It was so entertaining and amazing to hear what they had to say. The basic question is, What do you think about Bob Bennett??? Should he stay? Should he go?
Most people there believed he had done an excellent job, but it was his time to go.

That's when Daron and I wanted to talk to our friend Clint who works in D.C. for Senator Bennett. After we got home from the Caucus we talked to him and he informed us what Senator Bennett was really up to. Something that Clint said was that Senator Bennett is one out of two Senators that has successfully carried out a filibuster. That is pretty impressive considering Republicans don't have much of a chance anymore in Congress. I can't see a brand, spanking new Senator doing that.

I feel that in this time of change in the White House, it's good to have a Senator that already has some power over the other Senators. Since Senator Bennett most likely will NOT be running after this next term (if he is re-elected) I feel he should stay in for one last term. This whole thing with the Health Care plan is crazy. Bennett of course did not vote for it, and so it would be interesting to see what he proposes if he were to stay.

Politics is crazy, but after studying it in college I love the debates and learning about what's going on. I could go on and on, but I will stop for now. I'm glad we went to the Caucus. It was fun to be a part of the democratic process.

Wow, good for your precinct to have so many people. Mine had only 20. If I wasn't going to be out of town for the state convention I would have nominated myself for a state delegate, but as it is I was elected as a county delegate. Senator Bennett was actually at my caucus last night... it was his voting area. Amen to what you said about him. Check out my facebook status for a link to a blog about him.

It was by far the largest caucus I've been to (and it was my third).

We had very impassioned speeches about Sen. Bennett in our caucus and the vast the majority of the people there were against him.

I had a roommate who also worked for Sen. Bennett, and from everything she told me, he is just a good man. I don't care if he's made a few votes you don't agree with, sometimes I think it's better to have a good man in office than someone who promises you fresh ideas in Washington.

If Utah ousts Bennett, I will be sad for the state. Sometimes it just comes down to seniority, people! We won't even live here come fall elections, but I still feel quite strongly about it. I think people can be so short-sighted.

Hey! I went to my meeting last night too. I enjoyed it. It was my first. I got nominated as a county delegate but I had to veto it (since Josh and I do not know where we will be living). WE had about 30 people at ours. My dad got chosen as a state delegate. Although, I have to tell you everyone in our group was anti Bennett. And two other groups I talked to were also anti Bennett.

I went to Caucus just to see what it was all about & our precinct had 50 people in it. There were about 10 people standing for 3 hours, that is dedication! Anyways, I was just listening quietly when nominations for Secretary/Treasurer came up and my neighbor said my name & another neighbor 2nd it. I was in total shock but I'm excited to help out & be more involved. Our country is facing a trainwreck & they need to know our voice matters!
